The name ‘Zambartas’ is interwoven with contemporary Cypriot wine making. The Zambartas family has been practising the science of oenology since the mid 1970 's. The late Akis Zambartas, a graduate in Oenology from the University of Montpellier and 40 years of winemaking experience, founded Zambartas Winery at Agios Amvrosios, in 2006. The most significant achievement of his career however, was the scientific and systematic recording of the indigenous grape varieties of Cyprus. This was the catalyst in the preservation and dissemination of these ancient grape varieties.
In 2006 Akis released the innovative Zambartas Rosé, a blend of Cabernet Franc and Lefkada, which marked a new era of quality rosé wines in Cyprus. In the same year, Akis and his son Marcos, believing in the potential of Cypriot varieties, planted the first vineyard of the winery with the local, dynamic variety of Maratheftiko. Since then, the privately-owned vineyards cover an area of 8 hectares which are planted with the local varieties of Xynisteri, Maratheftiko, Yiannoudi, Mavro and Lefkada and the international ones, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
In 2014 Marcos Zambartas took over the management of the winery from his father. Having completed his studies in Oenology at the University of Adelaide, Marcos joined the winery team in 2008 and he is currently the head of the winery operations and manages the business. Together with his wife Marleen and their young and dedicated team they challenge themselves to improve every year.
The family's vision is to produce quality wines with organic vineyard practices and respect for the environment. This philosophy carries through to the winery where the wines are made with limited interventions highlighting the terroir of the Krasochoria wine region.
This vision was implemented initially with the creation of an innovative Xynisteri Single Vineyard wine from a 28 year old vineyard in the village of Mandria in 2014, which is the first certified organic wine of the winery. In 2020 we made a complete transition to organic viticulture, with the aim to create wines that express the uniqueness of Cyprus as a winemaking country.
